Before you bring in your Mac or iPad for repair

A practical preparation checklist covering backups, fault notes, accessories and protecting your personal information.

Before you bring in your Mac or iPad for repair

A little preparation makes the handover simpler

You do not need to fix the device before bringing it in. The aim is to protect your information and make the fault easy to understand. If the screen is broken or the device will not start, tell Ethan which preparation steps are impossible. Do not keep trying risky workarounds just to complete a checklist.

Before travelling, confirm the appointment, device model and main symptom. If you have a deadline for work or school, say so at the enquiry stage. An agreed drop-off time and a realistic discussion about parts availability are more useful than arriving with an assumed completion time.

Make a backup if the device is usable

Apple recommends backing up a Mac before service because repair can involve erasing or replacing storage. For an iPad, follow Apple's preparation instructions and check that your backup has completed. A backup you intended to make last month is not the same as a recent copy of your files.

Open a few important files from your existing backup where practical and check the date of the latest backup. Think about photos, work documents and files stored only on the device. If you cannot back up, explain that before authorising work and discuss the importance of the data. Repair and data recovery are different requests.

Describe the fault and what happened before it

Write down when the problem started and whether it followed a drop, spill, update or another repair. Include symptoms that seem unrelated, such as a charging issue alongside screen damage. This gives the technician context and helps avoid a quote based on only part of the problem.

For an intermittent fault, note the circumstances: for example, whether it occurs only on battery power or with a particular accessory connected. Bring a photo or video if you have already captured the problem. Avoid repeatedly forcing a damaged hinge or pressing on broken glass to reproduce it.

Protect your accounts and bring relevant accessories

Do not send your Apple Account password in an enquiry form or email. Ask what access is needed for the proposed testing and discuss privacy before handover. Apple's preparation steps vary by device and software version, so use its current guide and confirm the requirements for your appointment rather than disabling security settings in advance.

For a power or charging complaint, ask whether to bring the charger and cable you normally use. Remove unrelated accessories and make a note of anything left with the device. If it belongs to your employer or school, check their repair process before changing management or security settings.

Confirm the work before leaving

Make sure you understand the proposed repair, the quoted amount and how any additional faults will be discussed. Ask how you will be contacted and how collection will be arranged. Keep a record of the device and accessories handed over.
