One detail that makes your quote easier
A repair enquiry that says ‘13-inch MacBook with a cracked screen’ is a good start, but it does not identify the replacement part. Apple has made many 13-inch models. The model number, model name and a clear description of the fault help Ethan give you a more useful answer without several rounds of messages.
You do not need to know the technical specifications or take the laptop apart. Use whichever of the options below is accessible. If you are unsure what a label means, send a clear photograph instead of guessing.
If your Mac turns on
Open the Apple menu in the top-left corner and choose About This Mac. Apple identifies this as a way to find the model name and serial number. Write down the full model name, including the size and year shown, rather than only ‘MacBook Pro’ or ‘MacBook Air’.
For your enquiry, the model information is usually more useful than a screenshot containing your desktop or personal files. Crop the image to the relevant panel if you choose to send a screenshot. Share device identifiers directly with the repair business rather than posting them publicly.
If the display is broken
Look for the small print on the underside of the closed laptop. An A-number such as A2337 is a helpful starting point for a parts enquiry. Place the laptop carefully on a stable surface and photograph the print in good light. Do not remove the bottom cover to find it.
Apple also explains that a serial number may be available on the device or its original packaging. Its model identification support page provides alternatives when About This Mac is unavailable. If the label is too faint to read, tell Ethan that; an unclear photograph is better than an incorrectly copied number.
Add the information that describes the repair
Alongside the model, explain what you see. For a screen problem, say whether the glass is cracked, the picture has lines, part of the display is dark or the entire screen is blank. Mention a drop or spill and when it happened. For a charging problem, note whether the Mac runs when connected to power.
Keep the description factual. ‘The picture disappeared after the lid was knocked yesterday’ is more helpful than deciding that the motherboard has failed. If the issue comes and goes, note when it occurs. A photo or short video of the symptom can help with the initial conversation, although an inspection may still be needed.
Send a complete enquiry
A useful message is: ‘My MacBook is model [number]. The problem is [symptom], which started [when]. It happened after [event, if any]. Can you confirm the repair options, installed price and availability?’ Include a photo if it helps explain the damage.
